I get asked that question a lot.
Up until now, it has been a bit difficult to put it into words for me.
I know I prefer it. I have more Debian and Debian based installs than anything else.
What exactly is it about Debian that appeals to me though?
I finally figured it out today.
I have always been the type that likes to do it my own way. I don't just take the standard things and be happy with them.
I like to take it apart and see what's going on inside. Moreso, I like to lay things out the way I think they should go best.
Ever since I was a kid, I have loved Lego blocks. I thought they were the best things ever.
Back then, Lego block sets were just a big box of various shapes and types of Legos. Not the pre-determined sets that are available now, like pirate ship Lego set or space shuttle set Legos. Nope, back then it was you, a big box of god only knows how many different pieces and a couple pages of instructions on how to make the things pictured on the box cover. That's it. It was up to you and your imagination.
They gave you the base set and the blocks. That's it. You decided what to build and how to build it. You could use the instructions and have a good looking item or totally wing it and have something even your mother wouldn't recognize.
To me, Debian is the old fashioned Lego block set of Linux.
They give you a clean base and all the blocks in the form of packages in the repos. After that, it's up to you.
You can even decide which box of blocks you want to use, or mix and match from the various repos for the really imaginative ( and bold ).
That spells nothing but fun to me.
Each distro has it's own appeal to different people. I am not going to make a judgment on any distro in this article. Just saying why I Like Debian so much.
I like other distros for other reasons and maybe I'll explain those sometime in the future. Maybe not.
All I can say is give me a Debian netinstall disk or a base livecd and I'm a happy camper.
For me, it just doesn't get better than that.

Couldn't agree more!
One thing I think you missed - it's that with Apt you do get the Lego feeling but Apt gets out of your way and lets you get on with things unlike say.. Gentoo (which used to be my main distro before I (re)discovered Debian.
It's simple enough to be unobtrusive and that's probably why I prefer Debian over others.
Do you really think this is an aswer specific to Debian. What in Debian is not in another distro, let us say Fedora, that let you feel the same ?
I love Debian too (it is the only distro I used on all servers I admin in my university), and as you it is difficult for me to answer the same question.
You did not really give much to encourage anyone to try Debian.
If you want to build then there is Arch, Slackware, Gentoo. LFS and many more options. Where does Debian fit in when there are even more basic installations?
I would like to hear some compelling arguments that would cause someone to switch from what they currently use.
I don't like old fashioned things. That is what I don't like about Debian. You nailed it! Unfortunately most people see old fashioned as a negative.
How can you market a distro and expect it to grow if that is all that it offers?
Personally, I think that Debian has more potential and you are selling it short by marketing it as old fashioned.
LinuxCanuck,
That's where you and I differ apparently. I am not trying to "sell" Debian or convert people to using it.
I am not a Distro evangelist.
I simply expressed a simple opinion on why i, meaning me, like Debian. I never said it was better than other distros, I simply said it was my, meaning me, favorite.
If you try to read in anything more than that, I can't help you.
Beaufils:
I didn't say it was an "answer" at all.
I said this is why Debian is my, meaning me, favorite distro.
The reasons I stated I think are explanatory enough.
I was not contrasting or comparing it to anything else, merely discussing it on it's own terms.
Its good to see another Debian fan out here though.
Big Bear
Great article. I can only agree on your Lego analogy. It all makes sense and after reading your article I think I can also attribute my love of Free Software and hacking to Lego.
